Basel Münster

August 01, 2025

Together with the Mittlere Brücke, the Basler Münster (Cathedral) is probably the most famous landmark in Basel. With its red sandstone walls, colourful roof tiles and twin towers, no other building adorns the cityscape of Basel like the Cathedral. The former episcopal church was built between the years 1019 and 1500 in the Romantic and Gothic styles. The crypt, the chancel, the tomb of Erasmus of Rotterdam, the Gallus gate and the two cloisters are witness to a fascinating tale of construction over a period of several centuries. The piazza in which the Cathedral stands is today a popular meeting place and is often used for concerts and events. The Pfalz, the terrace offering wonderful views over the Rhine, is one of the most popular viewpoints in the city.

Basel Town Hall

June 09, 2023

The Basel Town Hall is a 500-year-old building dominating the Marktplatz in Basel. This splendid building on the market square was built in various stages between the 16th and 19th centuries and is still today the seat of the government and Parliament of the canton of Basel City. Particularly worth seeing at the town hall are the council chambers, the beautiful inner courtyard, the romantic arcades and the tower.

Nadelberg

December 07, 2022

Romantic and beautiful, this is the typical Basel feeling that is easy to catch on a walk in the area of Nadelberg. It's not exactly a mountain but a shopping and residential area in the inner city that is hilly. Starting at the Marktplatz, you can explore nice little shops from fashion to design. Nearly all the buildings date from the middle ages.

Basel

March 10, 2020

A view on the river Rhine and Basler Münster, originally a Catholic cathedral and today a Reformed Protestant church. One of the main landmarks and tourist attractions of Basel, it adds definition to the cityscape with its red sandstone architecture and coloured roof tiles, its two slim towers and the cross-shaped intersection of the main roof.

Thanks again for the tag Vanessa!

I bought this postcard with these adorable lion cubs in Basel Zoo. Not sure if those were born here and when.
