Wolf

April 05, 2025

The Veluwe is a forest-rich ridge of hills in the province of Gelderland in the Netherlands. The Veluwe features many different landscapes, including woodland, heath, some small lakes and Europe's largest sand drifts. Since 2019 the wolf is officially back with a female and male pair in the northern Veluwe who had their offspring in the summer of 2019 and one female wolf in middle Veluwe. The prognosis are that many more wolves will reclaim the area.

Loevestein Castle

April 02, 2024

The famous Loevestein Castle is a castle in Poederoijen at the very tip of the province of Gelderland. It is strategically located where the Maas and Waal rivers meet. As a result, the residents could clearly see any attackers arriving via the water. The castle has a rich history. It's part of the UNESCO site 'The Dutch New Waterline',a 85-kilometre long defence line with 45 forts, 6 fortresses and 2 castles in the Netherlands. Loevestein is more than a medieval castle. Built in 1358, it was soon expanded into a military fortress and in the seventeenth century it served as a state prison for political and religious dissidents. With its earth walls, double canals, bombproof shelter, and street with soldiers' houses, the fortress still exudes the atmosphere of an eighteenth-century soldiers’ village. The collections of Loevestein comprise three types of heritage: the castle and fortress itself, the museum collections, and the historical stories.

From Harderwijk

The Linnaeus tower is a 16th century staircase tower of a disappeared city building from the  Commandry's-Heerenloo. It owes its name to a buste of Linnaeus, who obtained his PhD at the University of Harderwijk. The Linnaea borealis is the only flower that is named after the botanist Linnaeus.
