Maine, the northeasternmost U.S. state, is known for its rocky coastline, maritime history and nature areas like the granite and spruce islands of Acadia National Park. Moose are plentiful in Baxter State Park, home to Mt. Katahdin, endpoint of the Appalachian Trail. Lighthouses such as the candy-striped beacon at West Quoddy Head, dot the coast, as do lobster shacks and sandy beaches like Ogunquit and Old Orchard. The Pine Tree State is the official nickname of Maine, earned because roughly 89% of its total land area is covered by forests. This makes it the most heavily forested state in the United States.

Bar Harbor

Bar Harbor is a town on Mount Desert Island along Maine’s Frenchman Bay. It serves as a gateway to the mountains and cliffs of neighboring Acadia National Park. Towering over the park, Cadillac Mountain has trails and views of the town, the bay and the Cranberry Islands. Sand Beach is ringed by mountains. From the town pier, the Shore Path winds along the bay overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and the Porcupine Islands. Whale watching in Maine is the perfect activity to experience marine life beyond lobster. You get so much more than just the big mammals. Sharks, seals, dolphins, and maybe some puffins could show up too.

Short Sands Beach

York Beach is a village within the town of York, Maine. The York Beach area consists of Long Sands and Short Sands beaches on the Atlantic Ocean in the Gulf of Maine. The two beaches are separated by Cape Neddick. The very popular Short Sands Beach is a quarter-mile-long sandy pocket beach tucked between rocky cliffs in the village of York Beach. The area has many arcades, shops, restaurants, and nightlife. Attractions include the Goldenrod, the Fun-O-Rama, and York's Wild Kingdom.

Whale Watching

One of Maine’s most spectacular and memorable attractions is whale watching. Whale watching off the coast of Maine begins in Mid-April, when whales return to the clean coastal Maine waters to feed on sand eels, copepods, plankton, and fish. The most common whales you can see off the coast of Maine are the humpback, pilot, minke, and the huge finback.

Portland

Portland, the largest city in Maine, is located on a peninsula in Casco Bay with access to many islands such as Peak’s, Great Diamond, and Long Island. Portland stands as one of the few working waterfronts left in the United States, acting as New England’s largest tonnage seaport and second largest fishing port. The Old Port district is known for its nightlife and 19th-century architecture.

Acadia National Park

Acadia National Park is a 47,000-acre Atlantic coast recreation area primarily on Maine's Mount Desert Island. Its landscape is marked by woodland, rocky beaches and glacier-scoured granite peaks such as Cadillac Mountain, the highest point on the United States’ East Coast. Among the wildlife are moose, bear, whales and seabirds.

Portland Head Light

'Portland Head Light is a historic lighthouse in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. Completed in 1791, it is the oldest lighthouse in the state of Maine.' The light station is automated, and the tower, beacon, and foghorn are maintained by the United States Coast Guard, while the former lighthouse keepers' house is a maritime museum within Fort Williams Park.
