Saint Rumbold's Cathedral

For more than 500 years, St Rumbold’s Tower has been the dominant feature of Mechelen city centre. The Gothic building consists of an ornate hall and a high turret known as the Saint Rumbold’s Tower. The interior of the church is decorated with stained glass and colorful paintings and sculptures while the tower, with its 49 bells, was designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. The view from the tower's skywalk, which reaches till the Atomium in the city of Brussel on a clear day is definitely worth the arduous climb up of 538 steps.

Large Beguinage of Mechelen

The Large Beguinage of Mechelen is a historical district that dates back to the 16th century. It was once home to a community of Beguines. Beguinages were small towns within a town. They had their own bakery, brewery, nursing home, church and bleaching fields. The area is characterized by its narrow streets, charming houses, and tranquil atmosphere. It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage List, recognized for its cultural and historical significance.

St Rumbold's Tower

For more than 500 years, St Rumbold’s Tower has been the dominant feature of Mechelen city centre. The flat-topped silhouette of the cathedral's tower is easily recognizable. It is 97 metres high and its 538 steps take you to a skywalk around the tower for a view of the rooftops of Mechelen. In 1999, the tower of the cathedral was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of the Belfries of Belgium and France site, in recognition of its architecture and its importance in civic duties such as a watchtower.
