Kaja & Skadi

Kaja & Skadi, born in Rostock Zoo in November 2021 and twin girls of mother Sizzel. There are currently 5 female polar bears living in Rostock Zoo: Lili, Noria, Sizzel, Kaja and Skadi. Noria was born in Brno in 2015. Lili was also born in 2015 in Zoo am Meer in Bremerhaven. Sizzel, a curious and relaxed polar bear, was born  in 2014 in Rotterdam Zoo. The species-appropriate facilities, which are designed according to Hudson Bay, offer the animals around 3,600 square meters of space and variety.

Zoo Rostock

Rostock Zoo, founded in 1899, covers 56 hectares and with 4,500 animals from 320 species, Rostock Zoo is the largest zoo on the German east coast. The female African elephant, Sara, who was the oldest in a European zoo, died 2013, and ended the Zoo's keeping of elephants, and the elephant enclosure was replaced with Pygmy hippopotamus. Rostock Zoo is studbook keeper of Polar bears.

Zoo Rostock

In 1969 the Rostock zoo opened a polar bear exhibit, which was then considered as one of the most modern bear exhibits. Soon later Rostock zoo was able to present regular breeding successes among there polar bears. It is due to these successful polar bear breeding that the Rostock zoo has chosen the polar bear as its logo and holds the international polar bear studbook since many years. The project 'Polarium' was opened in September 2018, in time for the 800-year town jubilee of the Baltic city of Rostock. The polar bears have lots of space in their compounds to play and romp around, to swim and dive, to rest and find seclusion, and much more: 3,600 square metres with more than 400 square metres of water area are available to the animals. The compound’s design is based on Hudson Bay.  The Polarium is the home for three young polar bears: Akiak, Noria and Sizzel.
