Lofoten

Lofoten is known for the northern lights, the midnight sun and small villages. Though Lofoten’s landscape is fantastic in its own right, it is the midnight sun which really gives a sense of the arctic location of the Islands and the feeling of being on another world. On Lofoten, located almost 200 kilometers north of the arctic circle, the summer sun will not sink below the horizon for nearly two months.

Arctic Norway

A beautiful card of Arctic Norway, showing the Midnight sun at Helgeland, the most southerly district in Northern Norway. Generally speaking, Helgeland refers to the part of Nordland county that is located south of the Arctic Circle. It is bordered in the north by the Saltfjellet mountains and Svartisen glacier, which form a natural border with the Salten district. In the south, Helgeland borders Trøndelag county.

The Midnight Sun

Dark Arctic winters have their counterpart in one of the most iconic of Finnish natural phenomena, the Midnight Sun. Many wonder how Finns survive with no sunlight in the winter, and nature replies with 24 hours of it in the summer. A quarter of Finland's territory lies north of the Arctic Circle, and at the country's northernmost point the sun does not set at all for 60 days during summer.
