Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks

Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks is a series of eight monumental earthen enclosure complexes built between 2,000 and 1,600 years ago along the central tributaries of the Ohio River. They are the most representative surviving expressions of the Indigenous tradition now referred to as the Hopewell culture. Their scale and complexity are evidenced in precise geometric figures as well as hilltops sculpted to enclose vast, level plazas. There are alignments with the cycles of the Sun and the far more complex cycles of the Moon. These earthworks served as ceremonial centres and the sites have yielded finely crafted ritual objects fashioned from exotic raw materials obtained from distant places.

San Antonio Missions National Historical Park

San Antonio Missions National Historical Park, Texas - Mission Espada.
Mission Espada was the first mission in the province of Texas, founded in 1690 as San Francisco de los Tejas. In 1731, the mission was relocated from east Texas to the present location along the San Antonio River and renamed Mission San Francisco de la Espada. Mission Espada is the southern most mission in San Antonio. Distinctive Spanish design features can be seen in the church doorway, bell tower, and brick archways.

San Antonio Missions National Historical Park

San Antonio Missions National Historical Park, Texas - Mission San José.
San José, the largest and most impressive of the San Antonio Missions, has evolved not only into a historic monument, but also a well-preserved part of modern local life. Part visitor center, part parish, part museum, and part natural space, it's operated by both the National Park Service and the church. The community was established in the 1700s by Spanish missionaries, who converted many Native Americans and taught them how to farm and work the land in exchange for protection. Today the buildings and grounds are open to the public for tours, wandering, and worship.

Franciscan missions, established in the eighteenth century along the San Antonio River, sowed the seeds of Spanish culture among the Indians of the Texas frontier. Venerable remnants of four missions are preserved within San Antonio Missions National Historical Park.

Pu'uhonua O Hōnaunau

Hide in the past at this ancient city of refuge, which today is a national historic park.

The historical park preserves the site where, up until the early 19th century, Hawaiians who broke a kapu, one of the ancient laws, could avoid certain death by fleeing to this place of refuge or puʻuhonua. The offender would be absolved by a priest and freed to leave. Defeated warriors and non-combatants could also find refuge here during times of battle. The grounds just outside the Great Wall that encloses the puʻuhonua were home to several generations of powerful chiefs.

Chaco Culture National Historical Park

Chetro Keti and Pueblo Bonito are less than three-tenths of a mile apart. these two pueblos, along with serveral smaller structures, may have been interconnected by maisonry walls.
Chaco Culture National Historical Park is located in northwestern New Mexico, between Albuquerque and Farmington, in a remote canyon cut by the Chaco Wash. Containing the most sweeping collection of ancient ruins north of Mexico, the park preserves one of the most important pre-Columbian cultural and historical areas in the United States. Chaco is remarkable for its monumental public and ceremonial buildings and its distinctive architecture, it has an ancient urban ceremonial centre that is unlike anything constructed before or since.
