North Cape

March 06, 2025

As mainland Europe’s northernmost point at the latitude of 71° north, North Cape (Nordkapp) offers breathtaking scenery, along with sightings of sea birds and possibly orcas. Rising to a magnificent 308 metres above the Barents Sea, it used to be a vital orientation point for sailors but is now better known for its spectacular natural beauty and for its large globe”monument on the cliff.

Many thanks Gian Lucca and Raffaella.

North Cape

The most northerly point in EuropeThe North Cape, around 71 degrees north and approximately 2,000 km from the North Pole, is located on Magerøya at the very end of the European landmass. The plateau itself rises 307 metres almost straight up from the Arctic Sea, but it is flat at the top. A little way down the mountain slope stands the rock formation known as the North Cape Horn, which is an ancient Sami site of sacrifice. From the plateau, you can look to the left all the way to Knivskjellodden, which is actually more than 1 km farther north. The North Cape is thus not really the most northerly point, but it is tradition to refer to the North Cape the northernmost outpost of Europe.

North Cape is a cape on the northern coast of the island of Magerøya in Northern Norway.  The plateau is a popular tourist attraction. The cape includes a 307-metre-high cliff with a large flat plateau on top, where visitors, weather permitting, can watch the midnight sun and views of the Barents Sea to the north. North Cape Hall, a visitor centre, was built in 1988 on the plateau. It includes a café, restaurant, post office, souvenir shop, a small museum, and video cinema.
