Halifax

Halifax, an Atlantic Ocean port in eastern Canada, is the provincial capital of Nova Scotia. A major business centre, it’s also known for its maritime history. The city’s dominated by the hilltop Citadel, a star-shaped fort completed in the 1850s. Waterfront warehouses known as the Historic Properties recall Halifax’s days as a trading hub for privateers, notably during the War of 1812.

Still Brook Falls

Still Brook Waterfall is a waterfall at mouth of Still Brook, where the brook empties into Black Brook Cove, and so into the Cabot Strait and the Atlantic Ocean. Still Brook Waterfall flows into Black Brook Cove at the north end of Ringing Beach and Black Brook Beach, a popular swimming and picnic site on the Cabot Trail in the Cape Breton Highlands National Park.

Historic Properties

A designated National Historic Site in the heart of downtown Halifax, Historic Properties is the first restoration project of its kind in Canada, featuring three city blocks of Canada’s oldest surviving group of waterfront warehouses and some of North America’s finest Victorian-Italianate façades dating back to the late 1700s and early 1800s. Charming historic buildings offer modern boutique shopping, gourmet dining, and true East Coast entertainment.

Joggins Fossil Cliffs

The Joggins Fossil Cliffs, a 689 ha palaeontological site along the coast of Nova Scotia, have been described as the coal age Galápagos and are the world reference site for the coal age. Their complete and accessible fossil-bearing rock exposures provide the best evidence known of the iconic features of the Pennsylvanian/ Carboniferous period of Earth History. The site bears witness to the first reptiles in Earth history, which are the earliest representatives of the amniotes, a group of animals that includes reptiles, dinosaurs, birds, and mammals. Upright fossil trees are preserved at a series of levels in the cliffs together with animal, plant and trace fossils that provide environmental context and enable a complete reconstruction to be made of the extensive fossil forests that dominated land at this time, and are now the source of most of the world’s coal deposits.

Landscape of Grand Pré

Situated in the southern Minas Basin of Nova Scotia, the Grand Pré marshland and archaeological sites constitute a cultural landscape bearing testimony to the development of agricultural farmland using dykes and the aboiteau wooden sluice system, started by the Acadians in the 17th century and further developed and maintained by the Planters and present-day inhabitants. Over 1,300 ha, the cultural landscape encompasses a large expanse of polder farmland and archaeological elements of the towns of Grand Pré and Hortonville, which were built by the Acadians and their successors. The landscape is an exceptional example of the adaptation of the first European settlers to the conditions of the North American Atlantic coast.

Nova Scotia

Nova Scotia's famous and historic fishing and shipbuilding port of Lunenburg. UNESCO, The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, has named the Old Town portion of Lunenburg a World Heritage Site.

Considered to be the best surviving planned British colonial town in North America, you can still see the tall ships moored off the port and hear the smith’s hammer.  Lunenburg’s harbour-side streets are lined with unique shops and award-winning restaurants that blend with the well-preserved and colourfully painted historic homes, much of it like a living museum from the 18th century.
