Altit Fort

June 15, 2025

Thought to be more than 700 years old and located 3km from Baltit (traditional capital of Hunza), Altit fort was the original seat of the rulers of Hunza. Perched on a rocky cliff with a sheer 1,000 feet plunge to the Hunza River, the fort is an intricate maze of rooms connected by small doorways, ladders and trapdoors, built on three levels.

Altit Fort is one of the oldest surviving forts in the area. Over centuries, it has served as a stronghold for various rulers and clans, witnessing the region's historical transformations. Today, Altit Fort is a meticulously preserved heritage site that offers visitors a glimpse into the architectural prowess and lifestyle of the ancient Baltit civilization.

Upper Kachura Lake

The Kachura Lakes are three lakes in the Skardu District, northern Pakistan. The lakes, at 2,500 metres in elevation, are Upper Kachura Lake and Lower Kachura Lake. Upper Kachura Lake is of clear water and has a depth of 70 metres. The beauty of the Upper Kachura Lake is almost untampered and mostly unexplored by travelers, due to lack of infrastructure owing to its rough terrain.

Thanks a lot Tahir!

The green represents the Muslim majority in Pakistan and the white stripe represents the various religious minorities. The crescent represents progress and the five-pointed star represents light and knowledge. The flag symbolises Pakistan's commitment to Islam and the rights of religious minorities.

Thanks a lot Rasa.

Kharkhari Lake

April 11, 2020

Kharkhari Lake is located in the Gabral area of Swat Valley, at a distance of 25 km from Utror towards north. Kharkhari is in fact a stretch of the Gabral river where it runs across level terrain and widens out giving the appearance of a lake. Jeeps can be hired from Kalam or Utror to get near the lake and then walk up for an hour to reach Kharkhari at 9.500 ft.

Thanks a lot Emily!

Shalamar Gardens in Lahore

February 21, 2020

My first card from Pakistan: The Shalamar Gardens, a Mughal garden in Lahore, layering Persian influences over medieval Islamic garden traditions, and bearing witness to the apogee of Mughal artistic expression. The Mughal garden is characterized by enclosing walls, a rectilinear layout of paths and features, and large expanses of flowing water. The Shalimar Gardens cover 16 hectares, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981.

Thanks a lot for this card Gert!
