Robben Island

Robben Island is located about 7 kilometers west of Cape Town. It was used at various times between the 17th century and the 20th century as a prison, a hospital for socially unacceptable groups, and a military base. Its buildings, and in particular those of the late 20th century maximum security prison for political prisoners, testify to the way in which democracy and freedom triumphed over oppression and racism.

Port Arthur Historic Site

World Heritage listed Port Arthur Historic Site is the best preserved convict site in Australia, and among the most significant convict era sites worldwide.  Between 1830 and 1877, about 12,500 convicts served sentences at what is now the World Heritage-listed Port Arthur Historic Site. More than 30 buildings and ruins dot the Tasman Peninsula site, ranging from a large penitentiary, which was originally constructed as a flour mill, to a roofless church built by convicts. Sombre scenes such as the much-feared isolation cells of the Separate Prison are contrasted by the neat homes and gardens of the settlement of soldiers and free settlers that arose around the prison.

Royal Engineers Office

The Royal Engineers Office is also referred to as the Kingston Information Centre and is set within a heritage building dating back to Norfolk’s days as a hellish penal colony. Here, you can buy tickets for entry to the Norfolk Island Museums located within the Kingston UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Veenhuizen

A card from the national prison museums in Veenhuizen, an interactive museum on the history of Dutch crime & prisons, housed in a former penal institution. Veenhuizen is part of the Unesco site Colonies of Benevolence, a 19th century experiment in social reform, an effort to alleviate urban poverty by establishing agricultural colonies in remote locations.

Cascades Female Factory

Cascades Female Factory Historic Site, located in Hobart, is the most significant site associated with female convicts in Australia. Operational between 1828 and 1856, it is listed as one of the 11 sites that together form the Australian Convict Sites World Heritage Property, inscribed on the World Heritage list in 2010. Now operational as a museum and tourist attraction, the site is managed by the Port Arthur Historic Site Management Authority.

Port Arthur Historic Site

The UNESCO World Heritage-listed Port Arthur Historic Site, located 90 minutes’ drive from Hobart is Australia’s most intact and evocative convict site. There is a lot to see and do with more than 30 historic buildings and ruins to explore over 100 acres. It is located approximately 97 kilometres southeast of the state capital, Hobart, on the Tasman Peninsula.

Alcatraz

Alcatraz Island appears isolated and alone on the Bay surrounded by afternoon fog.
Alcatraz Island, located in San Francisco Bay 2.01 km offshore from San Francisco, is home to the abandoned prison, the site of the oldest operating lighthouse on the West Coast of the United States, early military fortifications, and natural features such as rock pools and a seabird colony.
Alcatraz gained notoriety from its inception as the toughest prison in America, considered by many the world's most fearsome prison of the day. Former prisoners reported brutality and inhumane conditions which severely tested their sanity.

Fremantle Prison is the largest convict built structure in Western Australia and is the most intact convict establishment in the entire country. During the months prior to decommisioning the prisoners were permitted to paint their cells.
