San Juan National Historic Site

Old San Juan is home to the San Juan National Historic Site, with buildings dating from the 16th century, including the San Felipe del Morro and San Cristóbal fortresses and the old city walls. This fortification system is the oldest European construction under United States jurisdiction and one of the oldest in the New World.

La Fortaleza

La Fortaleza, along with the later fortifications of Castillo San Felipe del Morro, Castillo San Cristóbal and San Juan de la Cruz (El Cañuelo), and a large portion of the original San Juan City Wall, were built between the 16th and 20th centuries to protect the city and the Bay of San Juan. They are characteristic examples of the historic methods of construction used in military architecture over this period, which adapted European designs and techniques to the special conditions of the Caribbean port cities. Lying on the northwestern-most point of the islet of Old San Juan, Castillo San Felipe del Morro was designed to guard the entrance to the San Juan Bay, and defend the Spanish colonial port city of San Juan from seaborne enemies.

Flags of the World - Puerto Rico

The flag of Puerto Rico represents and symbolizes Puerto Rico and its people. The three red stripes represent the blood that nourishes the three branches of government, the two white stripes represent individual liberty and the rights of man which maintain the balance among the three branches of government. The white star represents the Commonwealth, the blue triangle represents the sky and the ocean, and the three sides of the triangle represent the three branches of the Commonwealth's republican form of government. The flag's design is based on the Cuban flag with the red and blue colors inverted.

Greetings from... Puerto Rico

Greetings from Puerto Rico, a Caribbean island and unincorporated U.S. territory with a landscape of mountains, waterfalls and the El Yunque tropical rainforest. In San Juan, the capital and largest city, the Isla Verde area is known for its hotel strip, beach bars and casinos. Its Old San Juan neighborhood features colorful Spanish colonial buildings and El Morro and La Fortaleza, massive, centuries-old fortresses.

El Yunque

The Caribbean National Forest, the only rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System, is located an hour from San Juan. Rising to 3,500 feet above sea level, on over 28,000 acres, you will find dozens of waterfalls, 240 species of trees, 67 species of birds, 13 beautifuly maintained hiking trails, huge tree ferns and hot pink impatiens flowers.
