The Historic Centre of Sibiu

Sibiu is a city in Transylvania, central Romania. It’s known for Germanic architecture in its old town, the legacy of 12th-century Saxon settlers. Around the city are the remains of medieval walls and towers, including the 13th-century Council Tower. In the upper town, Brukenthal Palace now houses the Brukenthal National Museum, with European paintings. The nearby Evangelical Cathedral has gravestones in its walls. In 2004, the historical center of Sibiu was added to Romania's tentative list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, but has not yet been officially inscribed.

The Endless Column

The Endless Column in Târgu Jiu, is a 29.3-meter-high masterpiece by Constantin Brâncuși, representing infinity and honoring WWI heroes. It is part of the Sculptural Ensemble of Constantin Brâncuși, which also includes the Table of Silence and the Gate of the Kiss. In 2024, the entire ensemble was officially inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Located in two parks connected by the narrow Avenue of Heroes, the property includes the monumental ensemble of sculptural installations and the pre-existing Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul, located on the axis. The remarkable fusion of abstract sculpture, landscape architecture, engineering, and urban planning conceived by Constantin Brâncuși goes far beyond the local wartime episode to offer an original vision of the human condition.

Brașov

Brașov is a city in the Transylvania region of Romania, ringed by the Carpathian Mountains. It's known for its medieval Saxon walls and bastions, the towering Gothic-style Black Church and lively cafes. Piaţa Sfatului (Council Square) in the cobbled old town is surrounded by colorful baroque buildings and is home to the Casa Sfatului, a former town hall turned local history museum.

Maramureș

Maramureș County is situated in the northern part of Romania, in the historical region of Transylvania, and has a border with Ukraine. 43% of the county is covered by the Rodna Mountains. The region is known for its beautiful rural scenery, local small woodwork and craftwork industry as well as for its churches and original rural architecture. There are not many paved roads in the rural areas, but most of them are usually accessible.

Moldovita Monastery

Moldovita Monastery is one of the eight painted churches from Romania included on the UNESCO Heritage List, all masterpieces inspired by the Byzantine art of the 15th and 16th centuries. Their distinctive elemen, the external walls covered with frescoes representing complete religious cycles, makes them unique in the myriad of churches built anywhere in the world at that time. It is situated in the commune of Vatra Moldoviței, Suceava County, Moldavia.

Corvin Castle

Corvin Castle is a Gothic-Renaissance castle in Hunedoara. It is considered one of the largest castles in Europe and is featured as one of the Seven Wonders of Romania. Built in a Renaissance-Gothic style and constructed over the site of an older fortification on a rock above the smaller Zlaști River, the castle is a large and imposing structure with tall towers, bastions, an inner courtyard, diversely coloured roofs, and myriad windows and balconies adorned with stone carvings.

Sighişoara

Sighișoara is a city on the Tarnava River in the historic region of Transylvania. Founded by German craftsmen and merchants known as the Saxons of Transylvania, Sighişoara is a fine example of a small, fortified medieval town which played an important strategic and commercial role on the fringes of central Europe for several centuries. Sighișoara is a popular tourist destination due to its well-preserved walled old town. The landmark of the city is the Clock Tower, a 64-m high tower built in 1556. It is now a museum of history.

Arbore Monastery

The Arbore Monastery is a Roman Orthodox monastery in the village of Arbore, Suceava County. The monastery church is dedicated to the Beheading of Saint John the Baptist and is known for its fresco paintings which are typical for the historical Bucovina region. The monastery is one of the 8 churches and monasteries that make up the Churches of Moldavia UNESCO World Heritage Site .From the original monastery of 1502, only the Church of the Beheading of Saint John the Baptist still exists today, together with the bell tower from 1867. The church is built of brick and stone from nearby quarries and has a rectangular plan without a spire. One of the most notable works can be found on the western facade, which entirely consists of a group of miniatures and is considered as one of the best fresco paintings of the era of Stephen the Great and Petru Rareș.

Cluj-Napoca

Cluj-Napoca, a city in northwestern Romania, is the unofficial capital of the Transylvania region. It's home to universities, vibrant nightlife and landmarks dating to Saxon and Hungarian rule. Surrounding its central square, Piața Unirii, is the Gothic-style St. Michael's Church and the dramatic Matthias Corvinus Statue of the 15th-century king of Hungary, Croatia and Bohemia in the early 15th century. It is a classified historical monument conceived and sculpted by Janos Fadrusz.

Villages with Fortified Churches in Transylvania

The south-eastern Transylvania region in Romania currently has one of the highest numbers of existing fortified churches from the 13th to 16th centuries. These Transylvanian villages with their fortified churches provide a vivid picture of the cultural landscape of southern Transylvania. The seven villages inscribed, founded by the Transylvanian Saxons, are characterized by a specific land-use system, settlement pattern and organization of the family farmstead that have been preserved since the late Middle Ages. They are dominated by their fortified churches, which illustrate building styles from the 13th to the 16th century.

Church of St George of Suceava

Saint John the New Monastery is a Romanian Orthodox monastery in Suceava. Built between 1514 and 1522, the monastery church is one of eight buildings that make up the churches of Moldavia UNESCO World Heritage Site and is also listed as a historic monument. The church is dedicated to Saint George and it has frescoes painted on the outside, typical of the region.

Danube Delta

The Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve is one of Romania’s and Europe’s natural treasures. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991, it’s one of Romania’s most spectacular attractions. The Danube Delta is the second largest river delta in Europe, after the Volga Delta, and is the best preserved on the continent. The greater part of the Danube Delta lies in Romania, with a small part in Ukraine. With the lagoons of Razim–Sinoe, located south of the main delta, the total area of the Danube Delta is 5,165 km2. The Razim–Sinoe lagoon complex is geologically and ecologically related to the delta proper and the combined territory is listed as a World Heritage Site.  The waters of the Danube, which flow into the Black Sea, form the largest and best preserved of Europe's deltas. The Danube delta hosts over 300 species of birds as well as 45 freshwater fish species in its numerous lakes and marshes.

University Square

The University Square of Bucharest has witnessed some of the most important events of recent history such as the Romanian Revolution. It's the gateway to Bucharest's Old Town. The National Theatre and Bucharest University are two other major attraction points accessed from this square.

Bigar Cascade Falls

Located in the Cheile Nerei-Beusnita National Park, the Bigar Falls is one of the most beautiful cascades in Romania. It's not famous for its enormous height or its amount of water but for its special bell-shaped formations. Located in the Anina Mountains, the rounded waterfall is almost eight meters high, and falls over an unusual and dramatic green carpet of moss. On 7 June 2021, part of the Bigăr waterfall collapsed due to the weight of travertine and moss that had increased over time.

Monastery of Horezu

Founded in 1690 by Prince Constantine Brancovan, the monastery of Horezu, in Walachia, is a masterpiece of the 'Brancovan' style. It is known for its architectural purity and balance, the richness of its sculptural detail, the treatment of its religious compositions, its votive portraits and its painted decorative works. The school of mural and icon painting established at the monastery in the 18th century was famous throughout the Balkan region.

Voroneț Monastery

The Voroneț Monastery is a medieval monastery in the Romanian village of Voroneț, now a part of the town Gura Humorului. It is one of the famous painted monasteries from southern Bukovina, in Suceava County. Often known as the Sistine Chapel of the East, the frescoes at Voroneț feature an intense shade of blue known in Romania as Voroneț blue. The church is one of the Painted churches of Moldavia listed in UNESCO's list of World Heritage sites.

Arcul de Triumf

Arcul de Triumf is a triumphal arch located in the northern part of Bucharest, on the Kiseleff Road. The first, wooden, triumphal arch was built hurriedly, after Romania gained its independence, so that the victorious troops could march under it. Standing 25m high, the Arc has a staircase that allows visitors to climb to the terrace on top of the monument, though only on special occasions: the National Day – December 1st and Veterans Day – June 9th.

Flags of the World - Romania

Like many other nations, Romania’s national flag is of a basic tricolor design. However, even though the design is simplistic, there is significant symbolism behind the colors chosen for the flag. The use of these colors date back to the Wallachian uprising in 1821. During this time, it was determined that the colors used in what would one day be adopted as Romania’s national flag represented liberty, justice and fraternity.
