Ehrenfriedersdorf Mining Landscape

The mining town of Ehrenfriedersdorf is located in the centre of the unique, mining-influenced cultural landscape of the Ore Mountains. It is one of the oldest medieval tin ore mining areas in Germany. Miners began extracting tin ores here in the early 13th century.

Annaberg-Frohnau Mining Landscape

Annaberg, Germany, is historically significant for its long-standing mining industry, which began with silver in the 15th century and later shifted to cobalt, bismuth, and tin. The region's mining heritage is a major part of its identity, and today visitors can experience it through show mines and a preserved hammer mill, which are now part of the UNESCO World Heritage site known as the Ore Mountains/Erzgebirge Mining Region.

Erzgebirge/Krušnohoří (Ore Mountains) spans a region in south-eastern Germany (Saxony) and north-western Czechia, which contains a wealth of several metals exploited through mining from the Middle Ages onwards. The region became the most important source of silver ore in Europe from 1460 to 1560. Mining was the trigger for technological and scientific innovations transferred worldwide. Tin was historically the second metal to be extracted and processed at the site. At the end of the 19th century, the region became a major global producer of uranium. The cultural landscape of the Ore Mountains has been deeply shaped by 800 years of almost continuous mining, from the 12th to the 20th century, with mining, pioneering water management systems, innovative mineral processing and smelting sites, and mining cities.

King Frederick Augustus Tower

The King Frederick Augustus Tower is the only preserved observation tower of cast iron in Europe and perhaps the oldest tower built of iron. It is located on the Löbauer Berg at Löbau in Saxony, offering a panoramic view of the Zittau Hills and the Upper Lusatia region. At a total height of 28 meters, the tower has three observation galleries at 12, 18 and 24 metres above ground.

Zoo Dresden

Dresden Zoo is one of the oldest zoos in Germany, home to around 1,031 animals representing 205 species. In addition to visitor favourites like the giraffes, African elephants, lions, Humboldt penguins and koalas, the zoo focuses on keeping and breeding endangered animals and rarely displayed Asian animals.

The first koala joey was born at Dresden Zoo late March 2023. Her name Janali derives from the Aboriginal word meaning moon.

Saxon Switzerland National Park

Saxon Switzerland National Park is the only non-alpine rock National Park in Germany and one of the smallest with a size of 94 square kilometres. It is located in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains. The protected area consists of two parts on the right bank of the River Elbe. The smaller part is situated in the surroundings of Kurort Rathen. The main part stretches from Bad Schandau eastward to the Czech border where Bohemian Switzerland National Park continues.

Augustusplatz

The Augustusplatz is a square located at the east end of the city centre of Leipzig. It is the city's largest square and one of the largest squares in Europe. The Paulinum building, resembling a church, belongs to the University of Leipzig. Along with other rooms, it houses the university auditorium and a prayer room. The Paulinum was built in 2007 and commemorates St. Paul's Church. Mendebrunnen is the largest and at the same time most magnificent fountain in the Leipzig city area.
