Snow leopard cub

November 06, 2025

A young snow leopard in Zurich Zoo.

The over 90-year-old Zurich Zoo lies in an idyllic location on the Zürichberg, in the city’s Fluntern quarter. The zoo is located high above the rooftops of Zurich, surrounded by greenery, yet can still be reached quickly and easily from the city center. Approximately 6,000 animals representing over 365 different species live at Zurich Zoo. The oldest resident is Nigrita, a Galapagos giant turtle. She is over 85 years old and has been living at the zoo since 1946. Panthera is the habitat of the big cats at Zoo Zurich. It is home to Asiatic lions, Siberian tigers, snow leopards and red pandas.

Since 1963, San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance has bred more than a dozen snow leopards. They currently have a female snow leopard called Naphisa, born at Zoo New England in May 2018 to Kira and Himal. She moved to the San Diego Zoo in December 2019 as part of the Snow Leopard SSP breeding. Unfortunately male snow leopard Ramil passed away earlier this year.

Tashi is the female snow leopard at Dublin Zoo. Since 2009, Dublin Zoo has been providing financial support for the Snow Leopard Trust which works in the countries the species still exists, supporting measures to protect this threatened species. Measures include a long-term ecological study in Mongolia, livestock vaccination and insurance programmes, conservation education and supporting local enterprises. Dublin Zoo also participates in the European Endangered Species Breeding Programme for snow leopards.

Marwell zoo

December 08, 2022

Marwell zoo is home to hundreds of exotic and endangered animals all within a beautiful, landscaped 140-acre park. Marwell‘s first snow leopards were a pair called Vikku and Pavel from the USA, back in 1977. Since then many cubs have been born at Marwell, who eventually went on to different zoos all over the world. Many of these cubs left to start families of their own as part of the Snow leopard EAZA Ex-situ Programme. The enclosure of current snow leopard’s Irina and Indeever (both born in 2008) was designed to simulate the landscape of the mountains that the snow leopards have evolved for. It has steep areas with rocks, cave shelters, narrow ledges and high vantage points to promote the snow leopard’s natural behaviours of climbing and balancing.
