Robben Island

Robben Island is located about 7 kilometers west of Cape Town. It was used at various times between the 17th century and the 20th century as a prison, a hospital for socially unacceptable groups, and a military base. Its buildings, and in particular those of the late 20th century maximum security prison for political prisoners, testify to the way in which democracy and freedom triumphed over oppression and racism.

African Elephants

African Elephants were hunted for their ivory for many years but now they are protected. Elephants eat +- 170-300 kg's of plant matter a day. They are 3-4m high and calf every 4-5 years. They are almost hairless and their top lip extends to form a trunk used for feeding and drinking.

Once ranging across most of Africa the Elephant population has declined dramatically across the continent. In South Africa the Addo Elephant and Kruger National Park protect large herds.

Simon's Town

Simon's Town is a town in the Western Cape, South Africa and is home to the South African Navy's largest base. It is located on the shores of Simon's Bay in False Bay, on the eastern side of the Cape Peninsula. Simon’s Town is one of South Africa’s oldest towns, known for its gorgeous beaches, rich history, and the colony of African penguins that call it home. Boulders Beach is located a few kilometres to the south of Simon's Town, in the direction of Miller's Point. Here small coves and beaches are interspersed between boulders of Cape granite. There has been a colony of African penguins at Boulders Beach since 1985.

Greetings from... South Africa, a country on the southernmost tip of the African continent, marked by several distinct ecosystems. Inland safari destination Kruger National Park is populated by big game. The Western Cape offers beaches, lush winelands around Stellenbosch and Paarl, craggy cliffs at the Cape of Good Hope, forest and lagoons along the Garden Route, and the city of Cape Town, beneath flat-topped Table Mountain.

Robben Island

Robben Island is an island in Table Bay, 6.9 kilometres west of the coast of Bloubergstrand, north of Cape Town. Robben Island was used at various times between the 17th century and the 20th century as a prison, a hospital for socially unacceptable groups, and a military base. Its buildings, and in particular those of the late 20th century maximum security prison for political prisoners, testify to the way in which democracy and freedom triumphed over oppression and racism. The symbolic value of Robben Island lies in its somber history, as a prison and a hospital for unfortunates who were sequestered as being socially undesirable. This came to an end in the 1990s when the inhuman Apartheid regime was rejected by the South African people and the political prisoners who had been incarcerated on the Island received their freedom after many years.

Boulder's Beach is named after the round granite rocks found in the area. Boulder's Beach near Simon's Town on the Cape Peninsula of South Africa is nesting place to a large part of the African Penguin Population.

Elephant Calf

Newborn elephants weigh approximately 100kg and consume over 10 litres of milk a day. They are reared by their mothers as well as the other females in the herd.

Flags of the World - South Africa

The flag of South Africa was adopted in 1994. According to official South African government information, the South African flag is a synopsis of principal elements of the country's flag history. Although different people may attribute personal symbolism to the individual colours or colour combinations, no universal symbolism should be attached to any of the colours. The only symbolism in the flag is the V or Y shape, which can be interpreted as the convergence of diverse elements within South African society, taking the road ahead in unity.
