General Artigas railway station

General Artigas railway station is the former main railway station in Montevideo, Uruguay. Located in barrio Aguada, it was designed by the Italian engineer and architect Luigi Andreoni, it was opened to the public on 15 July 1897 and was closed on 1 March 2003, being replaced by a station 500 metres to the north. The building was declared a National Historic Monument in 1975. Its façade is adorned with sculptures of prominent figures such as George Stephenson, James Watt, Alessandro Volta and Denis Papin, to which was later added a statue in honor of José Gervasio Artigas.

Flags of the World - Uruguay

The national flag of Uruguay is one of the three official flags of Uruguay along with the flag of Artigas and the flag of the Treinta y Tres. The horizontal stripes on the flag represent the nine original departments of Uruguay, based on the U.S. flag, where the stripes represent the original 13 colonies. The stripes of blue and white were inspired by the flag of Argentina, making the flag of Uruguay part of both the Stars and Stripes and Belgrano flag families.The golden Sun of May represents the May Revolution of 1810. The Sun of May is a figurative sun that represents Inti, the sun god and mythological founder of the Incan Empire.
