Woodland Park Zoo

Woodland Park Zoo is a wildlife conservation organization and zoological garden located in the Phinney Ridge neighborhood of Seattle. Woodland Park Zoo's 92 acres is divided into bioclimatic zones, featuring different natural habitats ranging from humid tropical rain forests and coastal deserts to temperate rain forests like those of the Pacific Northwest. The zoo is the recipient of over 65 awards across multiple categories.

Olympic National Park

Olympic National Park is on Washington's Olympic Peninsula in the Pacific Northwest. The park sprawls across several different ecosystems, from the dramatic peaks of the Olympic Mountains to old-growth forests. The summit of glacier-clad Mt. Olympus is popular with climbers, and hiking and backpacking trails cut through the park's rainforests and along its Pacific coastline. Olympic waters are home to resident orca pods, or family groups, meaning they stay in the cool waters all year long. Transient, or migrating, pods will also travel along the coast of the peninsula as they hunt for prey throughout the sea in varying times of the year.

San Juan Islands

The San Juan Islands are in the heart of the Salish Sea, home to five different types of whales, making the archipelago one of the best places in the world to see whales in the wild. Well-known for orcas, there are two ecotypes,the fish-eating Southern Resident pods and mammal-eating Bigg’s killer whales. Other whales include humpbacks, minkes, and grays. Though it’s possible to see whales here year-round, the best months are April through October, especially for orcas.

Anacortes

Anacortes, the crown jewel of Fidalgo Island, is conveniently situated halfway between Seattle & Vancouver BC, and is the destination point for the San Juan Islands and International Ferry runs. The island is known for its historic waterfront, 50-miles of hiking trails, and a mix of annual festivals. One of the best opportunities to see wild orcas in the world is right here in the Salish Sea. The booming population of mammal-eating Bigg's killer whales feed throughout the region year-round. In addition to killer whales, humpback whales, minke whales, and gray whales are also frequently seen throughout the year along with a variety of other marine wildlife.

North Head Lighthouse

North Head Lighthouse is an active aid to navigation overlooking the Pacific Ocean from North Head, a rocky promontory located approximately two miles north of Cape Disappointment and the mouth of the Columbia River, near Ilwaco, Pacific County, in the state of Washington. It is part of Cape Disappointment State Park.

Smithsonian National Zoo - Maharani

The largest living land mammals, elephants are intelligent, social and vital to their ecosystem. Slightly smaller than their African counsins, Asian elephants are native to India and Southeast Asia. Research on wild endangered Asian elephants is difficult and sparse, and zoo elephants are valuable sources of knowledge.

Maharani (on the postcard) is 33 years old, born in Calgary zoo and lives in Smithsonian National Zoo since 2014.

Mount Rainier National Park

Ascending to 14,410 feet above sea level, Mount Rainier stands as an icon in the Washington landscape. An active volcano, Mount Rainier is the most glaciated peak in the contiguous USA, spawning five major rivers. Mount Rainier is surrounded by valleys, waterfalls, subalpine meadows, and 91,000 acres of old-growth forest. More than 25 glaciers descend the flanks of the volcano, which is often shrouded in clouds that dump enormous amounts of rain and snow.

Mount St. Helens

Photographed from the former location of Harmony Falls, the shores of Spirit Lake are covered with the remains of its forest that once grew abundantly on Mount St Helens. The mountain is about 1300 feet lower than before the May 18, 1980, volcanic eruption.

Ruby Beach

Many people say Ruby Beach is the most beautiful beach in Washington State. What's not debatable is the idea that Ruby Beach is one place you need to visit on your trip out to the Washington Coast. Known for its iconic rock formations, reddish sand, huge driftwood structures, and active tide pools, Ruby Beach is one of the most well-known and visited beaches in the state. The iconic Ruby Beach sea stacks are some of the most famous sea stacks in the US. Formed over hundreds of years of erosion, these magnificent rock formations are brilliant and inspiring. Abbey Island is the most viewed sea stack at Ruby Beach, and one of the most photographed sea stacks in the Olympic National Park.

Tacoma

Tacoma is a mid-sized urban port city in Washington state, on the banks of Puget Sound, south of Seattle. It's known for the Museum of Glass, which has works by renowned glass artist Dale Chihuly among its exhibits. These include installations on the Chihuly Bridge of Glass. The Tacoma Art Museum has a strong Northwest regional focus. The Washington State History Museum features hands-on exhibits, plus a vast model railroad.

National Olympic Park

Olympic National Park is a United States national park located in the State of Washington, on the Olympic Peninsula. The park has four regions: the Pacific coastline, alpine areas, the west-side temperate rainforest, and the forests of the drier east side. Within the park there are three distinct ecosystems, including subalpine forest and wildflower meadow, temperate forest, and the rugged Pacific coast.
