Pilgrimage Church at Zelená Hora
January 20, 2012
Also my first card from Czech Republic today! The card shows the Pilgrimage Church of St. John Nepomuk, a unique Baroque Gothic building. The church is located at Zelená Hora, a green hill not far from the town Ždár nad Sázavou. The church is surrounded by cloisters.
The ground plan of the church has the form of a five-point star. This fact is alleged to have been based on a legend saying that a crown made of five stars appeared at the place where John of Nepomuk had drowned. The symbol can be found in other elements of the building as well. The church is accessible through five entrances and there are five chapels and five alters in the church.
In recognition of its unique value, the whole complex of Pilgrimage Church of St. John of Nepomuk was placed on the UNESCO List of World Cultural Heritage in 1994.
