Organ Mountains, New Mexico. On May 21, 2014, President Barack Obama established the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument. The new monument possesses a rich diversity of Chihuahuan Desert wild lands and unique Pre-American, New Mexican, and American history. The 496,330 acre monument protects a variety of geological, paleontological and archaeological resources and was established to protect significant prehistoric, historic, geologic, and biologic resources of scientific interest.
