Flags of the World - Ireland

December 02, 2020

Green color refers to the color of the emerald island and its Catholic part, orange points to the Protestant community and it is also a color of the Orange-Nassau family. The white stripe represents the efforts to unify these religious groups and to live in peace. The flag appeared in 1848 when it was used by the organization "Young Ireland movement", which strived to oppose the British rule. It had become more popular after 1916 when Irish republicans declared independence and it was accepted as the national flag in 1920. Moreover, the flag refers by its design to the French tricolor, which is perceived as a symbol of independence and freedom.

Thanks again Brian!
