The Historic Centre of Guimarães traces back to medieval age covering an area of 16 hectares and retaining many buildings from the medieval age until 19th century. The 10th-century Castle of Guimarães is a national symbol referred to as the Cradle of Portugal. The castle is a military fortification grounded primarily in the late Romanesque period, and elaborated during the early Gothic epoch of Portuguese architecture.  It was built in the middle of the 10th century by Countess Mumadona Dias, with the aim of protecting the monastery of Santa Maria against the Norman and Muslim invasions, very frequent at that time.  Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal, was born here. Next to the Castle of Guimarães you can find his monument.
