Whale Shark
July 10, 2021
The whale shark is a slow-moving, filter-feeding carpet shark and the largest known extant fish species. The largest confirmed individual had a length of 18.8 m. The whale shark is found in open waters of the tropical oceans. Today, the Philippines is home to over 1,950 whale sharks, making it the second-largest known whale shark population in the world. Despite the country’s history of whale shark hunting, the species is seen today as an icon for tourism and is featured on the Philippine 100 peso bill.
