Veenhuizen is a former penal colony, where more than one hundred official monuments bear witness to its unique past. Straight avenues and stately buildings, museums, workshops, atmospheric places to eat and drink ... In Veenhuizen, without exception, they are housed in historical buildings that are moreover highly coherent. They bear witness to the history of the Colony, a 19th century experiment in social reform, an effort to alleviate urban poverty by establishing agricultural colonies in remote locations.
