The Halligen are small islands without protective dikes located in The Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park. Hooge is the second largest of the ten Halligen in the Wadden Sea. The Wadden Sea along the coast of the federal state Schleswig-Holstein is one of the largest National Park in Europe and was designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve already in 1990, with an extension to cover the Hallig islands.
