From Tortosa,the capital of the comarca of Baix Ebre, in Catalonia. Tortosa is located at 12 metres above sea level, by the Ebro river, protected on its northern side by the mountains of the Cardó Massif, of which Buinaca, one of the highest peaks, is located within Tortosa's municipal boundary. Tortosa preserves significant examples of medieval, Renaissance, baroque and modernist architecture. It has been declared to be Historic-Artistic Heritage and some of its buildings, such as the castle of La Suda, are National Monuments. Tortosa cathedral is an outstanding example of Catalan Gothic architecture. Located at the foot of the promontory on which the castle stands, it stands on the site of the Roman forum, the Visigothic cathedral and the Muslim mosque.
