From Valladolid
October 03, 2021
Just a few kilometers from Valladolid is Dzitnup, one of the most interesting and typical natural springs or 'cenotes' of the Yucatan.
The Yucatan Peninsula is packed with gorgeous cenotes, and some of the best cenotes are found near the lovely Valladolid. Cenotes are essentially large sinkholes or caves, usually found in sedimentary limestone rock, that have filled with cool, clear groundwater and rainwater over time. Cenotes have great cultural and religious significance to the ancient Mayans, who believed that the cenotes were passages to the underworld. In fact, Mayans performed rituals in the cenotes and treated the sites as sacred.
Cenote Xkeken (Cenote Dzitnup) is a pretty small cenote, with the entire cavern measuring only 30 x 20 meters in size. The water level itself is only 20 meters deep at its deepest point, and the walls that surround this cave are filled with some beautiful stalactite and stalagmite formations.
Thanks a lot Omar!
