Defence Line of Amsterdam

March 29, 2022

The Defense Line of Amsterdam was built between 1880 and 1914 and consists of a connected network of locks, forts, dikes, ammunition depots and barracks. The defense network used water to slow down or even repel potential enemies, just as the New Dutch Water Line, another defense line, was used. The Stelling van Amsterdam has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of The Hollandse Waterlinies. The Defense Line of Amsterdam has also been designated as a National Landscape due to the combination of cultural heritage, nature and peace that it offers.
