Pechory, The large belfry

March 02, 2022

The large monastery belfry was built in 1523. It has six spans, the size of which is different - it depends on the size of the bells. Under the belfry spans there is a small church of Barlaam of Khutyn. In the XVIIIth century another span was built for the largest bell granted by the Tsar Peter The Great.  Nowadays the Large Belfry has 17 bells of different size and weight.

The Pskov-Caves Monastery is one of the few Russian monasteries that have never been closed at any point in their existence. The monastery has been an important spiritual centre for the Seto people. The Great Belfry is one of the largest architectural structures of this type and the collection of bells of the Pskov Caves Monastery is one of the most significant both in Pskov land and in Northwestern Russia.
