Lake Neusiedl

April 23, 2022

Lake Neusiedl is the largest endorheic lake in Central Europe, straddling the Austrian–Hungarian border. The lake covers 315 km², of which 240 km² is on the Austrian side.  The lake is part of the UNESCO site Fertö / Neusiedlersee Cultural Landscape. This is an area of outstanding natural values and landscape diversity created and sustained by the encounter of different landscape types. This area, a valuable biosphere reserve and gene bank, is home to a rich diversity of flora and fauna and has been shaped harmoniously for eight millennia by different human groups and ethnically diverse populations.

Lighthouse Podersdorf is located at the western edge of Podersdorf at the small harbour. It has a height of about twelve metres, which is enough to be visible from afar in the flat landscape of the region. The tower was built as a landmark and for storm warnings for water sports enthusiasts and is now a tourist attraction.
