Thousand Islands National Park was established in 1904 and is comprised of 21 islands and many smaller islets along the St. Lawrence River. Each island supports its own little ecosystem, ranging from short lichen-covered rocks to thick woodlands. The islands are actually the worn-down tops of ancient mountains. It is one of Canada's smallest national parks with a total area of 24.4 square kilometres.
