Jökulsárlón

March 05, 2023

Jökulsárlón is the largest and best known glacial lake in Iceland. The Glacial Lagoon is part of Vatnajokull National Park. The lake has grown at varying rates because of glacial melting. It is now 1.5 kilometres away from the ocean’s edge and covers an area of about 18 km2. It recently became the deepest lake in Iceland, at over 248 metres, as glacial retreat extended its boundaries. The lake is situated at the south end of Vatnajökull glacier. The lake is filled with floating icebergs which have been calving off the Breiðamerkurjökull and there you can seeskuas, big seagulls and seals at and in the lake.
