Lakshmana Temple

The Lakshmana Temple, located in Khajuraho is a 10th-century Hindu temple built during the Chandela dynasty. It is dedicated to Vaikuntha Vishnu. As part of the Khajuraho Group of Monuments, and owing to its architecture and religious importance, the temple was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1986. The temples of Khajuraho are known for the harmonious integration of sculptures with their architecture. All surfaces are profusely carved with anthropomorphic and non-anthropomorphic motifs depicting sacred and secular themes. Lakshmana temple is one of the most carved and decorated temple of Khajuraho. On the base of the temple a moving pageant of hunting and battleprocessions of elephants, horses and soldiers, domestic and erotic scenes are depicted. The four subsidiary shrines are placed at the corners of the platform terrace.
