Found within the walls of the iconic Galle Fort, Galle Lighthouse is Sri Lanka’s oldest lighthouse. It was built by the British in 1848, however, a fire destroyed the original building and a new one was built in 1934. The fort, like most of the forts in Sri Lanka, is built on a small rocky peninsula, belonging to the sea as much as to the land. As it exists today, it covers an area of 52 hectares.
