Cévennes National Park

September 05, 2024

The Cévennes is a cultural region and range of mountains in south-central France, on the south-east edge of the Massif Central. Rich in geographical, natural, and cultural significance, portions of the region are protected within the Cévennes National Park, the Cévennes Biosphere Reserve, as well as a UNESCO World Heritage Site: Causses and the Cévennes, Mediterranean agro-pastoral Cultural Landscape. The area is characterized by large stone farms, irrigation facilities and road networks from the Middle Ages which are still used today. Mont Lozère, the highest peak in the Cévennes, is one of the few places in Europe where summer transhumance is still practiced as in the old days, when sheep were taken from their fixed winter pastures to their fixed summer pastures.
