The Gambel's quail is nearly as much a symbol of southeastern Arizona as the saguaro cactus and the roadrunner. Its early morning call from a fence post or other elevated perch is a welcoming sound to the desert stroller. The most numerous species of quail in the Southwest, it's equally at home in the remote desert or subarban backyards.
