Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum

April 14, 2025

The Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum lies at the southern foot of Purple Mountain, located east of the historical centre of Nanjing. Zhu Yuanzhang, the founding emperor of the Ming dynasty, was buried here. It is one of the largest imperial mausoleums in China. The first section of this magnificent mausoleum is a 618m ‘spirit path’, lined with stone statues of lions, camels, elephants and horses that drive away evil spirits and guard the tomb. Along with the Ming Tombs north of Beijing, the Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum of Nanjing was inscribed by UNESCO as part of the World Heritage Sites 'Imperial Tombs of the Ming and Qing Dynasties'.
