Shortly before midnight on April 3, seven-year-old black rhino Mara gave birth to her first calf at Krefeld Zoo. The offspring is a female and has been named Billie by the zookeepers. Krefeld Zoo is known for its successful husbandry and breeding of the endangered black rhinos. Five baby rhinos have been born in Krefeld so far. Because black rhinos are solitary animals, there are two separate enclosures for the bull and the female.
