The Cyprus donkey is the donkey breed of the Mediterranean island of Cyprus. Donkeys are a celebrated cultural symbol in Cyprus, and are represented in many tourist trinkets, folklore and art. For centuries, they were also the backbone of the agricultural economy: they were used for transport, tilling fields and shepherding. Cyprus has two distinct donkey types: a larger, dark-colored breed and a smaller, grey African breed. A significant feral population exists on the Karpaz peninsula, where they roam freely.
