Kilkenny Castle built on the banks of the River Nore in the heart of Kilkenny City is one of the most impressive castles in Ireland. The original structure was built early in the 13th century for the 4th Earl of Pembroke, William Marshal before becoming the residence of the powerful Butler family whose ownership it remained in for over 600 years. The castle now belongs to the people of Kilkenny.
