Sümela Monastery is a dramatic, 1,600-year-old Greek Orthodox complex built directly into a steep cliff face in the Pontic Mountains of northeastern Turkey. Perched roughly 1,200 meters above sea level inside the Altındere Valley National Park, it is located about 47 kilometers south of the coastal city of Trabzon. Dedicated to the Virgin Mary, this iconic site is currently featured on UNESCO's Tentative World Heritage list and serves as one of the Black Sea region's most prominent cultural and historic landmarks.
