Icebergs

August 03, 2024

Icebergs are large piece of freshwater ice that has broken off an ice shelf and is floating freely in open (salt) water. This postcard was sent to me from Maitri, one of India's two operational research stations in the Antarctica (Maitri and Bharati). India has till date successfully conducted 42 annual scientific expeditions.

Many thanks Vingoul!

From Port Lockroy

December 29, 2023

A beautiful penguin card sent from Port Lockroy, British Antarctic Territory. Port Lockroy is a historic site and monument under the Antarctic Treaty. It is famed for having the southernmost post office in the world, which in 1996 was renovated to serve also as a museum.

Thanks so much Zhang!

Antarctica - Kunlun Station

September 17, 2020

Kunlun Station is the southernmost of four Chinese research stations in Antarctica. When it is occupied during the summer, it is the second-southernmost research base in Antarctica, behind only the American Amundsen–Scott South Pole Station at the geographical South Pole. It is located at 4087 m above sea level on the East Antarctic Ice Sheet, making it the highest base in Antarctica.  It is only 7.3 km southwest of Dome A, the loftiest point on the Antarctic Plateau. The station was officially opened on January 27, 2009. Fully constructed the station is planned to cover an area of 558 m².  The site is one of the coldest in the world, with temperatures occasionally reaching −80 °C in the winter.

Thanks again for this amazing series Zhang!

Antarctica - Zhongshan Station

Zhongshan Station is the second Chinese research station in Antarctica, opened on February 26, 1989.  It is managed by the Polar Research Institute of China and located in the Larsemann Hills by Prydz Bay in East Antarctica. The station can accommodate 60 summering personnel and 25 wintering personnel. It is a base for research on marine, glaciological, geological, and atmospheric sciences and for expeditions inland, such as to the Kunlun Station at Dome A.

Antarctica - The Great Wall Station

I was offered some amazing cards from Antarctica about the Chinese research stations there:  'Postmark cards in commemoration of the 30th anniversary of polar scientific exoeditions of China'.
The Great Wall Station was the first Chinese research station in Antarctica and opened on 20 February 1985. It lies on the Fildes Peninsula on King George Island, and is about 2.5 kilometres from the Chilean Frei Montalva Station, and 960 kilometres& from Cape Horn. The station is sited on ice-free rock, about 10 metres above sea level.

Thanks so much Zhang.
