Amoreira Aqueduct

Hidden in the charming city of Elvas, Portugal, lies the magnificent Amoreira Aqueduct, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that has provided life-giving water to the city since the 16th century. Stretching over 8 kilometers, this architectural marvel spans hills, plains, and rivers, serving as the sole water source for the region for centuries. This historical landmark played a vital role in sustaining the city, providing water for drinking, irrigation, and even powering mills. It is a symbol of the city's resilience and resourcefulness in ensuring its survival. Aside from its historical significance, the Amoreira Aqueduct offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. With its 8,5km in length and 843 arches, it is considered the biggest aqueduct in the Iberian Peninsula.

Amoreira Aqueduct

The Amoreira Aqueduct is a 16th-century aqueduct that spans the Portuguese municipality of Elvas.
This UNESCO World Heritage Site brings water from 8km away, providing life for the city of Elvas since the 16th Century. Spanning hills, plains and rivers, the aqueduct was the only water source in the region for centuries. The aqueduct has a length of 7,054 metres from its spring in the Serra do Bispo until the Chafariz do Jardim, and another 450 metres to the town fountain.
