Zollverein Coal Mine

May 23, 2025

The Zollverein industrial complex in Essen consists of the complete infrastructure of a historical coal-mining site, with some 20th-century buildings of outstanding architectural merit. It constitutes remarkable material evidence of the evolution and decline of an essential industry over the past 150 years.

Essen is a city in North Rhine-Westphalia in Germany. This former industrial city was the European Capital of Culture in 2010 and the European Green Capital for 2017. Essen was famous as a classic heavy industry centre which has changed since the 1970s. Only a few symbols remain from the former mining industry. Steel production is no longer as important as it used to be. Called the most beautiful coal mine in the world, Zollverein nowadays hosts diverse cultural highlights including an outstanding design centre and several museums.
