Lille Cathedral

August 24, 2024

Lille Cathedral, the Basilica of Notre Dame de la Treille, is a Roman Catholic church and basilica in Lille, and the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Lille. An example of Gothic Revival architecture, the cathedral is considered a national monument. The cathedral is located in the Vieux-Lille district, on the site of a former castle mound. The cathedral features a statue of Virgin Mary from the 12th century that is protected by an iron trellis. While the rest of the building is a reference to the Middle Ages, the main façade of the cathedral is modern-day and presents a strong contrast. Independent of the rest of the building, the entrance is made of 110 white marble sheets supported by a metal structure that was designed by Peter Rice, the same architect who designed the Sydney Opera house.
