Graceland

March 27, 2021

Graceland is a mansion on a 13.8-acre estate in Memphis, once owned by singer and actor Elvis Presley. His daughter, Lisa Marie Presley, has been the owner of Graceland since his death in 1977. It was opened to the public as a museum in 1982 and declared a National Historic Landmark in 2006. Graceland is the second most-visited house in the U.S. after the White House. Today, Graceland offers a glimpse into Elvis Presley’s personal style. Each room and the expansive grounds maintain the original decor and still serves as the the gathering place for Presley family dinners.

National Civil Rights Museum

February 17, 2021

The National Civil Rights Museum is a complex of museums and historic buildings in Memphis, Tennessee; its exhibits trace the history of the civil rights movement in the United States from the 17th century to the present. The museum is built around the former Lorraine Motel.
Originally the Windsor Hotel (c. 1925) and later one of only a few hotels for blacks, it hosted such entertainers as Cab Calloway, Aretha Franklin, Count Basie, B.B. King, and Nat King Cole. Walter and Loree Bailey bought it in 1942, renaming it the Lorraine. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., was assassinated outside Room 306 on April 4, 1968, making it a symbol for the civil rights movement. In 1982, a local nonprofit group saved the site from foreclosure for use as America’s first civil rights museum.
