Flags of the World - Norfolk Island

July 16, 2023

The flag of Norfolk Island was adopted in 1979 when the islands gained limited self-government. The colours and symbols of the flag carry cultural, political, and regional meanings. The green symbolises Norfolk Island's plentiful vegetation and fertile land. The Norfolk Island pine is native to the islands and is the official tree of the territory.

Thanks a lot Nathaniel and Marni!

St Barnabas Chapel

March 23, 2023

St Barnabas’ Chapel, otherwise known as the Melanesian Mission Chapel, or the Patteson Memorial Chapel, would be the most visited historic building on Norfolk Island and perhaps even in the whole South Pacific. Visitors are often surprised and delighted to come across such a picturesque and elegant church building on a small Pacific island. Built in a grand gothic style on a small scale, the Chapel was erected between 1875 and 1880 as a memorial to Bishop John Coleridge Patteson, the first Bishop of Melanesia.
