From Apenheul

February 06, 2026

Apenheul is renowned for its specialized Orangutan Island, an enclosure designed to mimic the natural arboreal lifestyle of Bornean orangutans. The orangutans at Apenheul enjoy playing games. That is why there are special orangutan puzzles on the Apenheul’s orangutan island. The keepers hide tasty morsels inside. Then the orangutans have to poke the snacks out with a stick.

Jolene

July 12, 2025

Jolene, a baby orangutan was born in April 2022 in Oregon Zoo. Her mother Kitra moved here in 2015 from Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, joining male orangutan Bob, the baby’s father, who had arrived from South Carolina’s Greenville Zoo the previous year. Kitra was a first-time mom. Orangutans are critically endangered, largely because of habitat loss driven by logging and the conversion of forests into oil palm plantations. Around 90% of the world’s palm oil is produced on the only two islands where orangutans live.

From Kölner Zoo

May 16, 2025

Two Bornean orangutans from Cologne Zoo. The great ape jungle house opened in 1985 as one of the first immersion exhibits in Europe. The enclosures mainly consist of swinging ropes, climbing bars, and various tropical plants to provide enrichment for the animals. Species housed include western lowland gorillas, orangutans, bonobos, pygmy marmosets, king colobus, and lion-tailed macaques.
