November 20, 2025

Now inseparably attached to the mainland, Saint-Malo is the most visited place in Brittany. Called the pirate city, Saint Malo enchants with its pirate charm, a journey back in time with its ramparts, fortified citadel and views of the stormy sea. Founded as a city of corsairs, strong in its ancient pirate tradition, Saint Malo has preserved over the centuries a marked spirit of independence and belligerent autonomy, which can be seen in the imposing fortifications jutting out over the ocean, giving it a proud and majestic air. Saint Malo holds a concentration of history, culture, gastronomy, sea views and windswept beaches. With its forts, lighthouses and ramparts, it tells stories of pirates and vessels, anecdotes of ship-owners, privateers and wandering sailors.

Saint- Malo, storm on the Sillon.

Saint-Malo is a historic fortified port city in Brittany, known for its high tidal ranges that can exceed 13 meters and frequent storms, which necessitate robust coastal protection and resilience planning for its residents and heritage sites. Located at the tip of a bay, the city's waterfront faces powerful wave overtopping due to these extreme tidal forces and a complex bay bathymetry.

Saint-Malo is a port city in Brittany, in France's northwest. Tall granite walls surround the old town, which was once a stronghold for privateers (pirates approved by the king). The Saint-Malo Cathedral, in the center of the old town, is built in Romanesque and Gothic styles and features stained-glass windows depicting city history. Nearby is La Demeure de Corsaire, an 18th-century privateer’s house and museum.
