Koala Crossing

July 26, 2025

A koala from San Francisco Zoo & Gardens.

In 1985, a pair of koalas were presented to the City of San Francisco by sister city, Sydney. Koala Crossing soon opened, a tranquil setting for these quiet marsupials located near the Australian WalkAbout. Over the years, the Zoo has been home to many of these well-known, finicky eaters, and have successfully produced several joeys. The habitat features an outdoor yard, where, if you look carefully, you can often a koala sitting high in the eucalyptus trees. In inclement weather, the koalas are usually kept inside their heated building, but one or two may be seen in the viewing window. Most of a koala’s day is spent snoozing to digest its eucalyptus meals, so watching a koala may not be too exciting; however, one look our koalas’ sweet and fuzzy faces and you won’t leave disappointed!

Many thanks Helen! 😍

Polar Bear

July 20, 2025

The San Francisco Zoo's last remaining polar bear, Uulu, passed away in April 2017 at the age of 36 due to congestive heart failure and old age, according to the San Francisco Zoo. She was a beloved attraction and a well-known resident, known for her playful nature and digging in the dirt, which often turned her white fur brown. Uulu's long life was a testament to the care she received at the zoo. Uulu was rescued and brought to the San Francisco Zoo when she was just three years old. She lived to be 36, making her one of the oldest polar bears in any zoo. Her exhibit also served as an educational tool, raising awareness about climate change and polar bear conservation.

Thank you Helen!

Fisherman's Wharf

May 19, 2025

Fisherman's Wharf is located on the north side of the city and is surrounded by San Francisco Bay to the north and the three large hills to the south, of which Nob Hill is the most famous. Fisherman's Wharf is the tourist heart of San Francisco. It is by far the most popular district in San Francisco, when it comes to attractions and entertainment. The biggest attraction is without a doubt Pier 39, with its restaurants and sea lions. Standing over 150 feet tall along the Barbary Coast Trail, the SkyStar observation wheel offers unparalleled perspectives of the city and bay. Enjoy panoramic sights of iconic landmarks like the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz Island, Coit Tower, and neighboring districts such as North Beach and Russian Hill.

Golden Gate Bridge

December 30, 2022

Crossing the strait of the Golden Gate from San Francisco's Presidio to the Marin headlands is the world-renowned Golden Gate Bridge, easily identified by its International Orange color. Once called 'the bridge that couldn't be built', today the Golden Gate Bridge is one the seven wonders of the modern world. This magnificent span, perhaps San Francisco's most famous landmark, opened in 1937 after a four-year struggle against relentless winds, fog, rock and treacherous tides. The 1.7 mile-long bridge is anchored by towers that reach 746 feet skyward and was once taller than any building in San Francisco! To support the suspended roadway, two cables, each more than 7,000 feet in length and containing 80,000 miles of wire, stretch over the top of the towers and are rooted in concrete anchorages on shore.

San Francisco, a cable car climbs the steep Hyde Street hill.
No experience is more uniquely San Francisco than a ride on a cable car. Cable cars have come to symbolize the city. Invented here nearly 150 years ago and named a National Historic Landmark in 1964, today's San Francisco cable cars are kept in tip-top shape.

Thanks a lot Joyce!

San Francisco Zoo

A beautiful koala from San Francisco Zoo, a 100-acre zoo located in the southwestern corner of San Francisco. As of 2016, the zoo housed more than one thousand individual animals, representing more than 250 species. You can see the koalas at Koala Crossing. When the temperature is between 65 and 80 degrees, the koalas may be seen munching eucalyptus leaves and snoozing in the outdoor enclosure. On chilly days, the koalas keep warm in an indoor exhibit, but you can see them through their window habitats.

Thanks again John!
